With its beautiful melodies, life-affirming stories, and unadorned performances, it has deeply moved generations of audiences. The stage of Lyu Opera is not only a repository of history but also a vibrant arena where the art form continually comes to life through the dedication of its performers. Today, a group of young actors born in the 1990s are infusing this ancient art with youthful energy and creativity, quietly propelling it toward broader stages. What artistic sparks will fly when Generation Z encounters the century-old charm of Lyu Opera? Chen Ming, a young actor, follows in the footsteps of his father, who is also engaged in Lyu Opera. For Chen Ming, Lyu Opera represents both his father’s expectations and his own passion—it is not just a profession but an integral part of his life. “A minute on stage takes ten years of practice offstage.” In today’s fast-paced world, the transmission of Lyu Operastill demands enduring patience and a focused mind. Actors must delve into their roles, understand the characters’ inner worlds, and accurately convey emotions, transforming nuanced experiences into moving moments on stage. Only by continually creating vivid and lifelike characters can Lyu Opera continue to win the hearts of audiences.

　　Breaking Boundaries: When Ancient Opera Meets Modern Trends

　　In their practice of Lyu Opera, the younger generation clearly understands that preserving the classics is only the first step; the more important task is to achieve innovative development of the art. Innovation does not mean straying from tradition but rather exploring bravely while retaining its essence—how can century-old Lyu Opera continue to attract young people today? This group of Generation Z performers has answered with action: by honoring tradition while embracing modernity. Young actor Ren Jing explains that the theater persists in offline activities such as bringing performances to rural areas and hosting weekend small theater shows. Online, they actively explore livestreaming and manage short video platforms. Chen Ming and his colleagues have also boldly experimented with integrating Lyu Opera with other art forms like magic, acrobatics, and film, innovating both performance and dissemination methods. They are no longer merely inheritors of tradition but also creators who use the language of the internet era and cross-border creativity to keep the ancient art form alive between livestreaming rooms and diverse stages.

　　From Local Roots to the World: The Melodious Charm of Lyu Opera Connects Across Borders

　　Embedded in the DNA of Lyu Opera are the simplicity and deep emotion of Qilu culture, as well as the profound local sentiment of the people of Shandong. This sentiment not only connects local theater enthusiasts but also touches countless Chinese living overseas. Jiao Li, Former Vice President of Shandong Lyu Opera Theatre, National First-Class Actress, and Winner of the Plum Blossom Award, notes that when LyuOpera performs in countries like France, South Korea, and Southeast Asia, its familiar melodies become an emotional bridge connecting overseas Chinese to their homeland. From local roots to the international stage, from tradition to modernity, and from classics to cross-border fusion, Lyu Operashines with new brilliance in the hands of Generation Z.
