··

Are you curious about how the ancients managed to survive the winter without warming devices? What are their superb ways to see the winter out? Let's go to Shandong Museum to find out!

  Healthy and Nutritious Meals

Located in the lower reaches of the Yellow River, Shandong’s agricultural production had reached a new stage in the Han Dynasty. The five cereals of rice, two kinds of millet, wheat and beans had been widely-planted. In some Han Dynasty ruins of Shandong, other cash crops such as vegetable leaves and dates were also found. Besides, they also needed protein. A batch of eggs was unearthed in a burial pit in Zhangqiu county of Jinan. It can be seen that thousands of years ago, Shandong people of Han Dynasty ate very well!

  Gathering for a Drink

Why are Shandong people good drinkers? This national treasure will tell you.

This beast-shaped red pottery was unearthed in 1959 at Dawenkou Cultural Site of Shandong Province with a history of thousands of years. It is a first-class national cultural relic and one of the most precious treasures of Shandong Museum! It looks like a piglet as a whole. The water injection port was designed at the tail of the piglet, and the water outlet was designed in the mouth. The belly design increased the capacity of the container. The stubby limbs support a space for firewood to heat the drinks inside of it. It’s amazing that the ancients already had such wisdom thousands of years ago.

  Fashionable Cotton-padded Jackets

There wasn’t a down jacket, but they do have pretty coats for winter. These two embroidered cotton-padded jackets are the collection of the Confucius Mansion and are now displayed in the Confucius Museum. The ancient people's winter wear was so fashionable and graced the long winters!

  Enjoying Board Games

Without mobile phones and computers, the ancient people definitely needed recreational activities to “kill time“. They would also play “board games“ in their leisure time just like modern people do.

The word “Boyi“mentioned frequently in modern times actually refers to two kinds of board games played by ancient people, “Bo” refers to the game “six Bo”, and “Yi refers to “Go“. These two games are very important to the entertainment of ancient people. It can be seen that although there weren't electronic products, the daily life of ancient Shandong people was not boring at all. Having dined and wined, it must be a great joy in winter to play board games with some friends to test your mental abilities and luck!
