In Shandong

“Where time falls silent, stones bear testimony,” an inkstone is essentially a stone, used for the purpose of writing. The Nishaninkstone, as one of China's famous inkstones, derives its name from the stone produced in Qufu's Mount Ni, engraving exclusive memories of Confucianism upon it.

Standing proud among Shandong's inkstones, the Nishan Inkstone boasts a rich history and unparalleled stone quality. It exudes an artistic allure that harmonizes simplicity with masterful craftsmanship.Sourced from layers within limestone, its availability is limited and extraction challenging. Beyond its traditional brown-black pine patterns, it embraces water motifs and intricate landscapes. In actual production, the inkwell and ink pool are carved according to the material, rarely adorned with extra carving. Often, inscriptions are chosen from The Analects, letting the natural beauty of the stone complement the essence of traditional Chinese Confucian culture in a dance of reflection and depth. In 2009, the craftsmanship of making Nishan inkstones was selected into the second batch of Shandong provincial intangible cultural heritage list.

To craft a refined inkstone out of Nishan stone, it is a journey of precision: from stone selection, matching, designing, engraving, polishing, to the final inscriptions. Traditional offerings include the Pine Flower Inkstone, Gourd Inkstone, Bamboo Joint Inkstone, as well as a variety of petite inkstones designed for tourists.Owing to its inherent resonance with Confucian elegance, the Nishan Inkstone has historically been esteemed gifts for royalty and nobility. After the foundingof NewChina, during the 1980sand 1990s, these inkstones graced exhibitions in Japan, Korea, and Singapore, drawing universal acclaim. The inkstones have also been chosen as gifts for events like the “International Confucius Culture Festival” and “International Confucianism Academic Conference,” winning the admiration of global scholars.Nishan inkstone, as a carrier of Confucian culture, increasingly demonstrates its immense historical, cultural, artistic, and social value.
