中国传统农历将一年分为24个节气。立冬，是一年中的第十九个节气。这意味着冬天即将来临，秋天收获的庄稼要储存起来。今年的立冬从11月8日开始，至11月22日结束。

　　The traditional Chinese solar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. Start of Winter, the 19th solar term of the year, means winter is coming and crops harvested in autumn should be stored up. This year it begins on Nov.8 and ends on Nov.22.

　　在立冬的第一天，中国许多地方都有“养冬”的习俗。人们通常会吃一些高热量的食物如鸡、鸭、牛肉、羊肉等，迎接即将到来的寒冬。今天咱们来到了有着四十多年历史的“网红市集”——济南民族大街，这里充满了热气腾腾的人间烟火气。走，一起去尝尝山东好品！

　　On the first day of Start of Winter, there is a custom in many places around China called “nourishing the winter”. People usually eat high-calorie food such as chicken, duck, beef, mutton, etc., to prepare for the oncoming cold winter. 　　一走进来，特色小吃、瓜果鲜蔬琳琅满目。碳烤鸡腿肉质软嫩；手撕排骨香气浓郁；粘米糕、驴打滚软糯香甜；韭菜饼、鸡蛋包、袋装豆浆都是山东人的心头好！捧着香气四溢的烤地瓜，再吃上一口热气腾腾的糖炒栗子，实在太满足啦！

　　A dazzling array of special snacks, fresh fruits and vegetables can be find as you walk in the street. Grilled chicken legs are soft and tender; hand-torn ribs smell so good; sticky rice cake and soybean-flour cake are soft, glutinous and sweet; stuffed leek pancakes, egg packs, bags of soy milk are also the love of Shandong people! Holding the roasted sweet potato, and eating a steaming sugar-fried chestnut, it’s so satisfying!

　　饺子是立冬时节的“重头戏”。根据民间传说，饺子是由东汉末年(公元25-220年)“医圣”张仲景发明而来。相传在东汉末年“立冬”前后，“医圣”张仲景救了许多患伤寒和耳朵冻伤的人。他煮羊肉、辣椒和草药来驱寒暖身，把这些原料包在面皮里，做成耳朵的形状。从那时起，人们学会了做这种食物，成为了众所周知的“饺子”。至今仍有“立冬不端饺子碗，冻掉耳朵没人管”这样的说法。

　　Dumplings are highlights of Start of Winter. According to folklore, dumplings were invented by Zhang Zhongjing, a renowned doctor during the late Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220).It’s said that at that time, Zhang saved many people from a typhoid epidemic and their ears' from being frostbitten. He cooked mutton, hot peppers and herbs to dispel the cold and increase body heat. He wrapped these ingredients into a dough skin and made it into an ear shape. Since then, people have learned to make the food which became known as “dumpling“. Today there is still a saying that goes “Eat dumplings on Start of Winter Day, or your ears will be frostbitten“.
